Project Summary

Seldovia Village Tribe (SVT) is conducting the first known community-level radon monitoring program in Seldovia, monitoring up to 60 homes for radon using Corentium Home radon monitors. The goal is to provide actual data about radon levels in Seldovia-area homes. In addition to testing of individual homes, SVT will conduct a public education campaign, the information learned about radon levels in the Seldovia area and how community members can mitigate radon in their homes. The project will be supervised by SVT's Environmental Coordinator with help from the Environmental Assistant. One part-time Project Technician will be hired to carry out monitoring and coordinate public outreach and education efforts.

Position Overview

Supervised by the Environmental Coordinator with assistance from the Environmental Assistant, the Radon Monitoring Project Technician is responsible for the SVT radon monitoring project and coordinating public outreach and education efforts.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Environmental Coordinator, this position carries out duties associated with SVT radon monitoring project.

Research, prepare, and present effective outreach and public campaigns of SVT radon monitoring project and issues to Tribal members, Tribal Council, community schools, and the public. 

Recruit participants for the monitoring program

Conduct in-home radon monitoring

Provide information about remediation options

Collect, analyze, and interpret data both in the field and in an office setting.

Maintain privacy of home residents/participants in the project

Maintain accurate records to document all activities in compliance with grant, local, state, and federal requirements.

Assist in the preparation of final report

Other duties as assigned

Specifications

Must have an interest in, knowledge of, and respect for Alaska Native lifestyles and culture.

Excellent data collection and data management skills – ability to turn raw data into manageable formats for reporting, such as graphs and charts, to be presented to conferences, environmental agencies, Tribal Council, etc.

Excellent report writing skills - must be able to analyze collected data and accomplishments to create reports for grantors, the Tribal Council, and the community.

Excellent presentation skills – must be able to both create and present information on projects, as well as community educational outreach. 

Excellent time management skills – must be able to work on multiple projects at once and meet deadlines.

Must be able to work independently, be self motivated, and work in the field without supervision for long periods of time.

Must be able to lift and carry heavy items (see physical demands for specific requirements.)

Problem solving skills – must be able to evaluate progress and make adjustments when and where necessary to attain goals.

Demonstrated maturity, dependability, judgment, and empathy in carrying out scope of work. 

Excellent interpersonal skills – must be able to present oneself professionally and work pleasantly with other agencies and the general public on behalf of Seldovia Village Tribe.

Job Requirements

Education:

2-year degree or work equivalent in related field, preferred

Experience:

- Experience in tribal environmental programs, a plus.

Certifications/Licensure:

No certifications required

Computer/Equip. Skills:

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.

- User knowledge of PC and Mac Computers

Work Environment

Seldovia Village Tribe is a drug-free, alcohol-free, and tobacco-free work environment.  This position may be required to travel to remote neighborhoods or residences.  An individual in this position may be exposed to environmental hazards common to an outdoor setting, including but not limited to insects, rough terrain, fresh and saltwater hazards, exposure to sun, wind, rain, and other types of weather.
